内容简介:

Tibetan author Ah Lai brings us a human perspective on his homeland and its people. Ironically, he does so by inventing a town – the rural community of Ji Village – and narrating the stories of its residents in the six novellas that make up Hollow Mountain: Legends of Ji Village.

The novellas are arranged in intermittent chronological order from the years before the Cultural Revolution all the way to the present day. The first five focus on the lives of individual residents of Ji Village as they experience the major events of the community’s recent history: the logging of its forests; a wildfire that burns half the village; the establishment of the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution; and the digging of a tunnel through Mt. Darmari. Each novella presents with striking inventiveness and care the lives of its characters as they make their way through circumstances entirely beyond their control. These stories and more come together in the final novella, the title piece “Hollow Mountain,” a masterpiece of character development and narrative brushwork in which local people’s struggles to re-imagine their own community as it changes before their eyes are brought out in full color.

作者简介:

阿来

As one of China’s few famous Tibetan writers, Ah Lai started his literary career in the 1980s as a poet. His first notable work after switching to fiction was the novel Settling Dust, which narrates the rise and fall of a Tibetan family in times of modernization from the point of view of a retarded son. The novel was published in 2002 by Houghton Mifflin under the title Red Poppies. After Settling Dust, Ah Lai published nothing substantial until Hollow Mountain.
